The aim of this study was to characterize the daily shell growth of Pecten maximus from early 1998 to late spring 1999 in the Bay of Brest with a careful qualitative and quantitative description of the pelagic primary production. Our results, in accordance with previous studies, demonstrate that there are episodic declines in the growth rate. Concurrent events of low growth rate and large bottom-concentrations of algae following diatom blooms (Cerataulina pelagica or Rhizosolenia delicatula), suggests that this high concentration of phytoplankton on the bottom layer may affect food intake or respiratory activity of the scallops by gill clogging or oxygen depletion. In this study, silicic acid or phosphorus are inferred to be limiting factors responsible... |

This study aims to describe the patterns of soft bottom macrozoobenthic richness along French coasts. It is based on a collaborative database developed by the “Réseau des Stations et Observatoires Marins” (RESOMAR). We investigated patterns of species richness in sublittoral soft bottom habitats (EUNIS level 3) at two different spatial scales: 1) seaboards: English Channel, Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea and 2) 0.5° latitudinal and longitudinal grid. Total observed richness, rarefaction curves and three incidence-based richness estimators (Chao2, ICE and Jacknife1) were used to compare soft bottom habitats species richness in each seaboard. Overall, the Mediterranean Sea has the highest richness and despite higher sampling effort, the English Channel... |

1. Reefs built by the annelid worm Sabellaria alveolata in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France) are the most extensive intertidal biogenic structures within Europe. Before and after mussel farming extensions, a study designed to provide a biological health index of the Sainte-Anne reef (223 ha) was carried in 2001 and 2007 to serve as an easy-to-use management tool and to ensure endangered reef portions were properly targeted and protected. 2. Coupled physical and biological parameters were included in a spatial Health Status Index (HI). A spatial and temporal mapping survey of the HI showed a continuous deterioration of the reef's state of health, particularly in its central part. This degradation correlates with the colonization of the Pacific oyster... |
